Wednesday July 27,
2005
Present: Lord
William Graham, Lady Eleanora the Tilemaker, Lord Corwyn, Lord Bilgisayar,
Lady Damiana.
Meeting called to order at 7:45 pm
Officer’s reports:
Seneschal
Good evening and welcome to the hot month
of July.
Zip Code Problems:
1) After doing a bit of research it appears that Ridley Park is not separated
from the Canton. There is an unofficial report that there are zip codes problems
on a higher level. We will purchase the map and double check this again.
2) The Canton does separate the Barony but it is not a priority as of now.
I am waiting to see on a few other developments and then make a move to change
up the Canton so the Barony is not separated from its southern Chester County
borders.
I am looking forward to camping with many of you at Pennsic.
Addendum to Seneschal’s report from Suba:
It has come to my attention that now that I am the Exchequer I can no longer
serve as drop-dead deputy for the Seneschal in the case of some emergency.
So while I will still be assisting Lord William, it is better if I step down
from holding the title. It would be good if someone would be willing to step
up to Deputy Seneschal in my place.
Exchequer
Our previous balance was $1,067.17.
There was a canton expenditure of $34.61 in July for the canton's poles for
the fly tarps.
Our current balance is therefore $1,032.56.
The new signature cards were submitted with Suba al-Hadid becoming a signatory.
The six month Exchequer report is due on Sunday.
Humbly submitted by Suba al-Hadid, Exchequer
Chatelaine
We had a very good demo at the Media-
Upper Providence Library on Tuesday June 28 with the following gentles
taking time from their busy day to share the SCA: My thanks and undying
gratitude go to the following people who came out in response to my plea:
Lord Bryan the Archer, Lord William Graham, Lord Geoffrey Gryphon, Lady
Marrun Graham. There were approximately 22 kids aged 6-16 and 10-12 adults.
We did a little dancing, discussed heavy fighting and passed around Lord
Bryan's helm, and demonstrated fencing. The kids' favorite part was the
fencing.
At the Tinicum Library Wednesday night June 28th we had a similar bumper
crop: 25 kids aged 0-14 (heavy on the 0-6 age group) and 23 adults. We
had a great time dancing and gave out paper game boards.
The June 30 demo, at the Springfield Library, was a HUGE success. Thanks
go to Lord Eirikr, Lady Cellach, Lady Eleanora, Magdalena, Danielle, Juliette,
Emma the Clever, Serena, and Quintus. In addition to the turnout of SCAdians,
we had NINETY-FIVE attendees, of which maybe 20 were parents and the rest
were kids. It was a mob! They seemed to have a good time. We did some dancing
(with assistance from Emma the clever, Serena and Quintus) and then Lord
Eirikr told us about fighting and about heraldry (and brought some things
to show and hand around). After that Lady Cellach talked about embroidery
and beadwork and showed some of her incredible work. Lady Eleanora and
Magdalena helped with the crowd, and Quintus and Juliette helped hand out
the paper game-boards we'd brought to give away. We ran out of gameboards
and flyers and the library kindly made lots more copies for us. To all
our volunteers - vivat!
The Sharon Hill Library demo on July 7th was attended by approximately
20 kids of varying ages and about 10 adults, and they danced two dances
and then settled down to play medieval board games (Nine Man's Morris,
Alquerques, and Fox and Geese) of which we had paper copies with rules.
After the games we concluded the program, but invited people to stay for
more dances. We succeeded in learning two more dances, and ended with much
enthusiasm - we had two sets for Black Nag, which means we had 12 people
still willing to dance the last dance of the day. Suba had a lot of fun,
and a former Scadian (Animesh) who attended also had fun.
The Marcus Hook Library demo in July 14 was great fun. Our volunteers for
this demo included Corwyn, Mustafa, Suba, and Suba’s Kids. We had 5 children
and 8 adults come and participate in the dancing and the board games. They
asked us a lot of good questions, and Corwyn told us a lot about chainmail.
The July 19th demo at the Radnor Library was attended by Suba al-Hadid
and her kids, and we had about 23 kids and 14 adults. We were able to dance
several dances and play several board games. After we closed the program
we had some some folks stay to learn one more dance (Gathering Peascods
– a favorite with my kids).
The July 20th Faire at the Lansdowne Library was very well attended with
probably over 100 patrons, both kids and adults. From the SCA, Suba and
her kids came. The Faire had many volunteers running different parts, including
a bouncy castle, face painting, snacks, balloon animals, and a fencing
demo featuring two students and their instructor from the Fencing Academy
of Philadelphia. After the fencing demo, we taught three dances. We played
a few board games.
The July 21 demo at the Haverford library was also well-attended. Suba
taught three dances to a very participatory crowd of approximately 25 kids
and 25 adults. Both the patrons and the Library are very interested in
more dance practices, and the library has made overtures to offer us space
in which to have dance practice. I will be speaking with Terry Carr (?)
about this later. Haverford is not within our boundaries I believe, but
I think the Barony will grant us permission to host practices there. I’m
considering having dance practice once per month at Middletown Library
and once per month at the Haverford Library.
Our last two demos are coming up soon!
We have a demo at the Middletown Library on Saturday July 30th at 2pm,
please arrive at 1:30pm. They made a beautiful flyer for us – please pass
it around. It does look better in color; I only have the black and white
version. We’ll be in the community room in the basement of the library.
We have out very last demo at the Upper-Darby Primus Library on Monday
August 1 at 7pm. Please be there at 6:30 if you can. They have a small
space; we’ll be in the center of the main (only) room of the library.
Thank you so much for coming to all the demos that you can. The kids really
love seeing armor and fencing or fighting. Even if you can’t fence or fight
but have armor, please bring it for show and tell. If you have any other
crafts or stories or photo albums, please bring those as well.
We may possibly have a new person joining us tonight – Rayven.
Herald
Submitted two devices. Worked on Eleanora's
device; still researching name.
Mistress of Arts and
Sciences
24 napkins were presented to the
Baroness to be included in the Pennsic baskets. Busy preparing
50 salamander favors for the Barony & Baroness.
Currently sewing aprons for Runnymede dinner.
Addendum to MOAS report from Suba:
Dance Practice: we held dance practice on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th
Mondays in June and the 3rd and 4th Mondays in July. These were
poorly attended
since I never did send out the press release. However, I do believe
that Dance practice is a great recruiting tool and I’d like to
continue to pursue having a dance practice within the canton. It
would be
wonderful if other active members of the canton could attend one
or more of these when I work out logistics for space in the fall.
Thanks!
Webmistress
Canton minutes were posted this month and webpages for demos were completed.
The website now reflects the new spelling of our canton name.
How do we feel about linking to merchants who either live within the
canton’s borders or who have greatly supported the canton?
Do we want to link to merchants who came to Beltaine or to other events
that we ran?
Consensus: No problems about providing links on our webpage.
Martial Activities
We support our area practices - Lord Darmyn's practice on Thursday,
Caer Adamant is Thursdays (slow) and Sundays (full metal).
There will be fencing meetings very soon at Rogue's Den. Those will
probably happen on Thursday afternoons. This will be unofficial for the
time being. Contact Lord William for information.
Fencing is Thursday nights in Bhakail.
Thrown Weapons continue Thursdays 6:30-dusk at Deiniol's house.
Archery - We have a possibility of practice space at DCFS. Canton likes
the idea and asks us to move ahead.
Archery is Tuesday nights in Caer
Adamant (except 3rd Tuesdays) and 2nd and 4th Sundays at Padraig's
house in Middletown Delaware (about
an hour's drive).
Chamberlain
Bilgisayer has the canton’s sunfly.
It needs to get to Pennsic.
