General Rules

1. Eligibility

Open to any person that is an active member of the SCA, at least 21 years of age, and attending the event. All entries must fit into one of the categories in section 8 below and must have been produced by the entrant.

2. Number of Entries

Entrants may enter up to 2 items in a single category. Entrants may enter as many of the competition categories as they wish.

3. Bottles

Entrants should provide 1 bottle (or other suitable container) of at least 6 fluid ounces per entry. Bottles with ground glass stoppers will not be accepted.

Bottles will not be returned unless the entrant makes special arrangements.

4. Documentation

Documentation requirements vary between competition types. The basics are listed here:

Recipe documentation:
Name of potable: Required
Type of potable: Required
Recipe, including ALL ingredients: Required

Process Documentation:
Description of process used: Strongly encouraged.
Period process comparison: Strongly encouraged.

Historical Context:
Who, What, How, When, Where, Why: Encouraged

Extremely minimal or lack of documentation can hurt your entry. Without knowing anything about the entry, the judges may be forced to make certain assumptions that may hurt your scores.

5. Submission Process

Entries will be accepted between posted times: 10am to Noon. The location will be posted at Troll or some other designated area. Entries will not be accepted before or after posted times except when granted by pre-arrangement due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. distance of travel).

Judge comment/scoring sheets will be available to be picked up at posted location or may be mailed to the entrant (if prior arrangements are made).

There will be no fee for entering the competition.

6. Fine Print

All entries accepted will be judged as best as possible regardless of compliance with these rules. However, entries not meeting the above requirement may not be eligible for prizes and honors.

The decision of the competition organizers and judges will be final concerning eligibility, prizes, and honors.

7. Category Differentiation

Beer/Ale: Any potable that derives the majority of its fermentable sugars from grain. These may contain other sources of fermentable sugars, as long as the majority is from grain. If there is no majority (Midas Touch Ancient Ale, for example), the judges will determine its categorical placement.

Wine: Any potable that derives the majority of its fermentable sugars from fruit. These may contain other sources of fermentable sugars, as long as the majority is from fruit. If there is no majority, the judges will determine its categorical placement.

Mead: Any potable that derives the majority of its fermentable sugars from honey. These may contain other sources of fermentable sugars, as long as the majority is from honey. If there is no majority, the judges will determine its categorical placement.

Cordial: Any infusion of flavoring agents (herbs, spices, fruit, etc) in an alcoholic base. Bases include, but are not limited to: distilled alcohol, wine, mead, and beer/ale. Cordials may be sweetened or unsweetened.

Other: Any item that does not fall into an above category. Items such as ciders, kumis, kvass, vinegars and non-alcoholics fall into this category.

8. Judging Process

Each beverage will be judged by a panel of knowledgeable judges according to the scoring numbers listed above. Each potable is judged individually, according to form and style and according to the documentation provided.
